Duration of the peer review process takes on average 17 weeks and differs much between scientific fields. Medicine, Public health and Natural sciences have shortest durations. Mathematics/computer sciences, Social sciences, Economics/business and Humanities have longest durations. Qualitative data indicates that besides by a long duration of the process, authors are most frustrated by editors who do not take an independent position vis-à-vis reviewers and by bad communication of the editorial office.
